YouTube Live is on tonight (Currently 8:30 hours away), will you be watching?
YouTube is telling people to tune in, by way of a banner across the top all of today http://bayimg.com/image/oamlcaaba.jpg
For the time it starts in your timezone, reference this: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=11&day=22&year=2008&hour=17&min=0&sec=0&p1=224
I'm very excited about this event, does anyone know how long it will go on for?
I have to start watching at 1:00AM :(
For those that don't now, YouTube "L!ve" (Interestignly similar to Yahoo L!ve's logo) is a “a celebration of the site’s vast user communities; everyone from bedroom vloggers to world-famous rock stars, musicians, comedians, athletes, artists and more. Part concert, part variety show and part party, the event will bring to life many of the amazing videos and talent that YouTube viewers have already made popular on the site.”
Many of the poeple at the event are featured in this promo-video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QATAtvkDPVA
Interestingly, YouTube has this ad taken out with DoubleClick http://m1.2mdn.net/1275935/live_pyv_2a_300x100.gif Doesn't the fake link go against Google's policy?
BTW: I love the branding for this, the video is nice the logo is cool http://bayimg.com/image/oamldaaba.jpg But i wish it was spread around a bit more. I mean, not many people know about it outside of constant Internet/YouTube users from my experience, maybe you're different.
Lets not forget that YouTube is supposed to be doing Live Video for users this year
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/29/confirmed-live-video-on-youtube-this-year/
<< Meyers: “When are you guys gonna do live video on YouTube?”
Chen: “2008. We’ll do it this year.
“Live video is just something that we’ve always wanted to do, we’ve never had the resources to do it correctly, but now with Google, we hope to actually do it this year.”>>
Things are going good with YouTube it seems :) |
I think the event has been created for youtube users, so they are the ones that should be informed. |
I'm going to watch it tonight, starting at 11 PM :) It's a cool idea to test the platform! At the Facebook event page there almost 12k users attending. The channel has a lot of suscriptions too (over 60k), so I think at least they are going to have an audience of 30k people (come on, it will be more for sure) |
2000 new servers have been installed just for this event, with an available bandwidth equal to entire Netherlands one. |
Kate Perry Just introduced it as "The YouTube Awards" |
[moved from "YouTube Live; 700,000 Concurrent Viewers"]

Actually surprised that google doesn't have the money to create their own streaming server... I assume youtube is the third most used google product, so they should have a fair budget... |
But YouTube isn't that profitable, if at all. Why waste money on a server when you can borrow someone else's? |
Not much hands-up cheering but a lot of cell phone filming in that still? :)

:) this is what you get when you bring a lot of nerds (I guess they invited some youtube pops there) to a concert.... nobody really interested in the arts (music), just spectatel itself :) |
Who wouldn't be filming that particular act Philipp :) |
The worst part about being England: Americans always plan events in the middle of the night :P
There's a tab on their site that says "full show" but it only has a few clips, do you think they'll upload the whole thing, or just keep adding clips? |
I watched some of it last night (sort of 1.00 – 1.30 am in the UK). I thought it was pretty good.
I'm a bit annoyed with YouTube's country localization though. I can't get to youtube.com anymore, I have to go to uk.youtube.com. Which in general is fine because the content is largely the same. But for the YouTube blog for instance the content is different... and I can't read the US YouTube blog...
If I go to: http://youtube.com/blog?entry=ZsqTqulw9rk it redirects to http://uk.youtube.com/blog?entry=ZsqTqulw9rk which has nothing on it.
(This link is to the YouTube post about YouTube live).
Anyone else have these problems? |
> Actually surprised that google doesn't have the money > to create their own streaming server...
For this event, Akamai offers exactly what Google needed – in the same way that Google has enough money to build their own bathrooms from scratch yet they still pay outside plumbers who use bulk-manufactured pipe.
When Google releases their own streaming server, it will be something technically different from Akamai's content distribution, because Google will need to stream the main content but intersperse personalized ads. In other words, if you've been searching online for new cars that day, expect to see ads for cars (or for car insurance) when you watch a concert that evening. |
Sam, I'm having no trouble, I just change my Ssite preference to "Worldwide" and it works. |
Click This (It will say UK for you, not worldwide) http://bayimg.com/image/oamakaabb.jpg
And then select worldwide from here http://bayimg.com/image/oamanaabb.jpg

Thanks James. Personally I don't think the interface is particularly helpful / easy to follow in this case. |
