BTW, it might be good to sort the results in date order when searching for these posts in order to get the real newbies!

http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch?q=%22first+post%22&scoring=d

I've also found searching for ["first blog"] is a good way to find newcomers too. You can, of course, combine the two:

Welcome to the blogosphere, newbie

This kinda reminds me of when Improv Everywhere did a mission they called "The Greatest Gig Ever" or something similar ... they picked a completely obscure band that was planning on playing a gig for 10+ people, and then had 200 people download that band's songs, get to know the lyrics, create their own t-shirts, and – Surprise! – show up at the gig.

The band was amazed, and amused. Fun stuff.

The author of the first blog you linked to replied in the comments: "These comments are apparently coming from a game in Germany that Google-searches on the words "first post" and then everyone piles on to give that blogging neophyte a warm welcome. Except...I'm not a neophyte. Um, guys? This post is not a first post, it's ABOUT first posts."

A good idea is to use this query:
site:blogaddress.com
to see if it has only one post.

I posted on them all. It is a really great idea and I am sure it will encourage them to keep blogging. Just like that Measure Map guy who posted on the Google blog. He posted his first entry and that was cool. Then someone commented and it all just got waaay cooler.

Interesting. I guess it would be nice to see polite messages that don't link to dating sites, degree courses or stock sites.

I wonder how they'll react though.

Hope we don't scare them.

But I have to disagree with the game. It's raising people's hopes, that's why it's a "game". The reality is that the bogosphere has a very unequal and lopsided attention-distribution. Why further delude new members?

What a great idea! I shall spend this afternoon surprising new bloggers with great compliments.

Trogdor – I love Improv Everywhere, I've seen a lot of their stunts but not that one!

Can I just add that it is a great idea, but it loses its fun and appeal if it is not a coordinated co-effort.

Because if I find a new blog and post "Welcome to the Blogosphere" etc. on it, it's not really funny unless at least 5-10 other people do it too!!

So, we should perhaps keep a running tab on possible "victims" here (or somewhere else) so that the newcomers actually get a warm welcom, not just a lukewarm one...

Isn't this called blog spamming?

I've only be going now for about 2 weeks (today is 2 weeks exactly!) with my blog foobr.co.uk
But I purposefully didn't do a 'first post' type post.
Infact I waited till I had written half a dozen entries before I even put it live.

and no one is posting comments to my blog :(

I included two corrections into the post... it's harder than I thought to find new bloggers!
