Firefox 2.0 Posted a Day EarlyDPic | Tuesday, October 24, 2006 17 years ago • 8,269 views |
A number of readers alerted us to the [link removed] day-early [accidental] posting of Firefox version 2.0. At this writing the top page at mozilla.com still doesn't mention its availability. One reader pointed us to [link removed] a mirror and another recommended a comprehensive review [http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2006/10/firefox-2-review/] of Firefox 2.0, with many screenshots, over at mozillalinks.org. Update by RM[http://slashdot.org/~Roblimo/]: – links above removed at request of Mozilla release people. They asked us to link to this note [http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/preed/2006/10/the_antirelease.html] instead. They're only asking us to wait until Tuesday Afternoon (U.S. Pacific Time) for the official 2.0 download, which isn't long. (Patience is a virtue, etc.)

The RSS default formatting is neat. (I'm sure this is all old news to the early FF2 adopters!)

Major, Major problem: I cannot type in ANY textboxes or textareas on any webpages. That means I cannot type a Google search on the Google homepage, I cannot type this forum post (This is being typed on IE7). Also, Google is not selected as the search engine in the top right corner, and the "Manage Search Engine" box doesn't work, not letting me download new search engines. |
James Bradbury | 17 years ago # |
I restarted Firefox, and at first the same problem occured. However, I visited the Yahoo site, and I could type in the search box there, and then I went back to Google and I could type in it. The second problem still has not been resolved, and I went to the Firefox add-on site and Google is not there because it is usually preinstalled. But on mine, there were no search engines installed at all. |

Excellent update! Not earth-shattering, but certainly more mature. Now, I can't wait for the official Portable version from http://PortableApps.com! (I'm using Firefox Portable v2.0 RC3, and it works SO well! |
Josue R. | 17 years ago # |
yep Jim, portable firefox is the new cool =) ... but i'm sure we'll have to wait just 1 more day for it. |
Stu | 17 years ago # |
Do they have plans to ever make Firefox compliant with W3C standards? At least Firefox 2 RC3 wasn't, I'm waiting on the portable version of the final before I try it. |

"It’s good to see that Firefox doesn’t change the interface too much, so you’ll immediately know how to use this version – this is not the case for users switching from Internet Explorer 6 to 7..."
Ironic, then, that a lack of progress in its interface has been one of Internet Explorer's greatest critiques. |
Philipp Lenssen | 17 years ago # |
Stu > Do they have plans to ever make Firefox > compliant with W3C standards?
Which W3C standards exactly? Firefox does get a whole lot of W3C right, or what do you mean?
Brian > Ironic, then, that a lack of progress in its interface > has been one of Internet Explorer's greatest critiques.
Critiques for lack of progress in its *interface* or in its actual *features* (like security, W3C support, getting rid of bugs like misunderstanding XHTML content types)?
I think Firefox did great by fixing bugs while adding features and yet not confusing the interface with unnecessary changes. IE7 failed in this regards, in my opinion... (as do many other new Windows tools, like Windows Media Player). IE7 should fix bugs and add meaningful features, but moving every button around or not putting the menu on top anymore does not help. |

<< IE7 should fix bugs and add meaningful features, but moving every button around or not putting the menu on top anymore does not help. >>
I thought the same thing when I first installed Windows XP and saw the Start Menu... and then I found the "Classic Start Menu" option. Why didn't they just have an "Classic IE Menus and Buttons" option in IE7 and enable it by default if upgrading from IE6? (BTW, I've not installed it – yet – so it could be there and I just don't know it... I assume people have looked for it?) |

I've been using the Firefox 2 RCs for some time now, I switched because I was getting incredibly annoyed with the fact that I usually can not right click and copy. Unfortunately, FF2 did not fix that bug. Control + C usually works, but there are some instances (such as highlighting a portion of text) that that is less convenient.
One more issue I have, is I can't seem to figure out how to edit my dictionary for spell checking. I'm sure it is simple but I just can't find it! My problem is that I accidentally added a couple words to my dictionary (since the option to do that was right next to the correct spelling) and now I don't know how to remove them! |
Philipp Lenssen | 17 years ago # |
If you search the Firefox help for "dictionary" you'll get "no matches found". Weird. |

By the way, if the new tab scrolling annoys you like it annoys me, get Tab Mix Plus https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1122/
I have my tabs going onto two lines. |
Art-One | 17 years ago # |
Splasho: it ain't compatible yet with FF2.0 I think... |
David Hetfield | 17 years ago # |
its not youll have to use Nightly Tester Tools to use it :)
i think Firefox should consider embedding the Tab Mix Plus into Firefox.. dont you think guys? |
Splasho | 17 years ago # |
Sorry, I should have said that that page reads: "I REALIZE THAT FIREFOX 2 IS GOING TO BE RELEASE ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24. A NEW VERSION OF TAB MIX PLUS IS GOING TO BE RELEASE SHORTLY AFTER THAT, IN LESS THAN A WEEK. PLEASE BE PATIENT, FOR NOW YOU CAN TRY THIS VERSION EARLY.

[Update: Nope, the copy & paste bug is still in. Sigh.] |
John Marshall | 17 years ago # |
What copy and paste bug? |
Philipp Lenssen | 17 years ago # |
I don't use tabs, I'm handling multiple Windows (not sure if that's related to the bug, just saying 'cause it's not default).
Sometimes I want to copy & paste something but it just doesn't paste (in Firefox, e.g. the address bar). The only thing I found out is that it always seems to be connected to when I have text selected somewhere. So I then need to go back and unselect the text in some other window, then click again in the input box where I want to paste, and then paste again.
Sounds weird, but this happens half a dozen times every day and it's really annoying... especially because copy & pasting is such a basic thing to do, you don't even think about it, but Firefox always interrupts this. |

Did you file that bug you are talking about? Were people able to reproduce it? |
Katinka Hesselink | 17 years ago # |
I love the new firefox, mostly because it's faster for me.
Slight annoyance is that the furl-add on doesn't work and switching to the yahoo-toolbar and saving pages in my web has bugs. I tried saving one page, and ended up double saving another. Furl is probably working on updating their toolbar button, so this should be a temporary thing.
I have less hope for the yahoo-toolbar, because it has other usability issues as well. See: http://www.katinkahesselink.net/internet/yahoo.html
[off topic: I love the automatic signatures on here by the way :)] |

I still cannot get my FireFox search box to show Google and also, when I type for instance "blog.out" in the address bar and the dropdown comes up, I click "blog.outer-court.com" and nothing happens. Does anybody know how to roll back to FF 1.5? |
Juha-Matti Laurio | 17 years ago # |
Dear folks here, it's called
Firefox, not FireFox (!!)
;-) |
Philipp Lenssen | 17 years ago # |
> Did you file that bug you are talking about? Were > people able to reproduce it?
I got involved in one bug filed once only to hear that it's not important, and it took them 2 years to fix this. I get to believe that Bugzilla is not the right way to trigger a change unless maybe you get really involved in the system and the community, so as I have other involvements I'll just wait and hope. Besides, I don't know how to give clear instructions to reproduce this... other than "use the thing for a day on Win XP without tabs and you might get it a dozen of times". But yeah, I've heard others mention a copy / paste bug too, maybe it's in their bug database... |
