My home town of Lancaster is also at higher resolution, but there are two odd things:
1. The photos are very old, I estimate they were taken five years ago.
2. Although the photos are higher resolution, I can't zoom in so far. In other words, I can't make my house appear as big, even though it looks much sharper. And that applies even if I try to use the "z" parameter trick. |
Maybe photos taken from the air get much cheaper when they are five years old. |
Not that Google is known for worrying about money... |
Yeah, the new imagery for North Devon in the UK is at least five years old too. Half of the buildings in my street are still under construction! Still though, it's nice to have some high resolution imagery – it's so nice to be able to explore my town like that and see everything, and it was taken on a really sunny day too. The fields and hills and beaches and rivers and moorland all look gorgeous! It looks like they have pretty much the whole of the UK covered in high-res now – I wonder why Devon & Cornwall were neglected for so long? |
By checking things that have changed over time, I established that the Lancaster UK photos are from summer 2002. |
BTW, China is now (partially) on Google Maps! |
AFAIK they were... only that satellite maps were (and still are) self-censored on Google.cn. |
Where I live (to the east of Brighton [UK]) has also been upgraded. I think the pictures are 3 to 4 years old as my School's still all there (most of it got burnt down 2 years ago) but one of the blocks has been knocked down but a car park has not been placed there yet. |
