I don't think it's for a nonproportional font. Just squint a little bit! I think it should resemble hand-written(?) script.

According to the comments on the blog Barry linked, there's now a punctuation filter that is causing ads with repetitive punctuation to get bumped down or off the page completely.

That scale is a bit smaller than I normally work at when I do ascii art. Maybe if google ever starts doing full page ads they will play nice and do them in text. If that happens, and thats a really big if, then I will have to quit my day job and start doing a lot more ascii art.

These ASCII Art Ads of SIXT Mietwagen are fake. Watching the background, you can see three Ads with ASCII Art, all with sixt.de as display-URL. Google would never deliver three ads of the same advertiser.

Actually the Google approval team would not accept these ASCII art ads.

And now I have to tell my customers that it does not make sense to thinking about ascii art texts... [sic!]
