I tried using multiple accounts on multiple browsers and i can't get in! |
Ylde | 15 years ago # |
Idem here (Paris, France).
I get a 502 error page:
"We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.
Please try accessing your account again in a few minutes.
Try Again Sign Out"
I hope this is due to an update or a new feature release. BTW, my Google account has been log out too in the process. |

Getting this in the UK
<<We’re sorry, but your Google Mail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

I'm in the US
This better be because of some awesome upgrade!!! if not i'll be very angry/disappointed |
Mrrix32 | 15 years ago # |
Beat me by 20 seconds :(
Basic HTML view still works (don't know the direct link, I went through the Mobile version :P) |
Achille | 15 years ago # |
Same here, gmail is down. |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
aw damn, i'm disappointed this isn't anything excited. just gmailfail |
TOMHTML | 15 years ago # |
Still down.
"Update: We are still investigating the 502 errors, but are receiving reports that users are still able to access their accounts via IMAP, POP access, and iGoogle. "
Cool, but with iGoogle, you can read you mails, you can't reply to them. |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
what's the url for html view? |
Josue R. | 15 years ago # |
same problem too. before error #502 occurred randomly for over a month, now i get error #786. This only happens on 1 of 5 accounts but only on Google Apps Mail version. |
Josue R. | 15 years ago # |
meant: get error #796 |
Josue R. | 15 years ago # |
whats the html view for Google Apps Gmail, not GMAIL alone? |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
nvm, html mode doesn't work but the url is https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=a |
Edouard | 15 years ago # |
Now, it's 12pm in Marseilles and I doubt it is a big problem in Western Europe. But 3pm in LA...
What's the average time of downtime of web apps (espacially Google's ones)? Who between Europe and the US people is the most annoyed by Internet crashes? |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
Josue R. I think you just add ?ui=html&zy=a to the end of the url.
Google must be shitting their pants right now if they really don't know what is causing this.... |
Zim | 15 years ago # |
I'm having the same problem. I didn't noticed before that the error page now has two links: try again, and sign out. Both useful. (I have a screenshot) |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
Edouard, there is no average downtime. i don't think i've ever seen anything like this on gmail.
Zim-- that's it! they must be doing this to test the new links on the error page! |
Luca | 15 years ago # |
By the way.. only Gmail is down, other apps (calendar , docs , etc) are up (slower but up)
this make me a bit more relaxed , so not the entire "sign on " system look compromised. |
Josue R. | 15 years ago # |
HTML view withing Google Apps Gmail is:
https:// mail.google.com/a/<DOMAIN>/h/
DPic thanks

DPic | 15 years ago # |
Hmm...not for me. I tried that in two browsers again and no dice. Signed in and out. |
Dani | 15 years ago # |
"The Gmail team is currently aware of a subset of users being affected by the 502 error on login."
A subset? Or everyone? |
TOMHTML | 15 years ago # |
Mrrix32 your tip worked! :) Thx |
Mrrix32 | 15 years ago # |
Or if your really desperate, you could try mobile view (still no guarabtee it will work) http://mail.google.com/mail/x/ |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
Still no dice :( |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
> A subset? Or everyone?
Anyone here who *can* access the normal Gmail?
> Gmail in basic HTML mode works for me...
On the other hand, performing combo box actions in basic HTML mode threw the error once more. So did Gmail mobile after I clicked on a subject... |
Arie | 15 years ago # |
I can get in using the browser on my Palm Centre, and it still works with Outlook (IMAP).. BTW it effects Google Apps hosted email as well..
|
Ylde | 15 years ago # |
My Normal version is back (Paris, France). My Basic HTML one has always worked. |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
Seems like it's like spreading or something.....everyone seems to be having issues but some are worse than others
i'm talking to people who can only access on one computer, i know i can't access gmail anywhere although some can get to it in html mode or mobile |
Ylde | 15 years ago # |
It works...
and a new error!
From the yellow tape on top Gmail screen): "Oops… the system encountered a problem (#796) – Retryyin..." |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
ah! i got it! phew |
Mrrix32 | 15 years ago # |
Philipp Basic HTML and Mobile versions seem to be working fine for me
Ylde Normal version still down here |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
okay i just lost it again... |
Nicholas | 15 years ago # |
I could still access it, but it wouldn't let me do certain functions like send email. Then, I logged out and logged back in and got the error message...
This is a first and sucks. :(

Leif902 | 15 years ago # |
The basic HTML and iGoogle workarounds worked for me.
"We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue." |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
it's back for me again...let's hope it stays that way. I'd like an explanation, google! |
Mrrix32 | 15 years ago # |
Still not working here, and I just got logged out of my Google Talk account too. |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
<<the sign-in page shows 7GB of storage>> not quite. 7000MB /= 7GB |
Tim | 15 years ago # |

m.raczka | 15 years ago # |

Srinath T V | 15 years ago # |

Dominic Parker | 15 years ago # |
Was down, back up for me (FF 3) |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
To those who see it working again: are you using Gmail in https or http mode? |
Ylde | 15 years ago # |
https |
Luca | 15 years ago # |
works in stuttgard :-) (FF3 on https) |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
https but by settings are set to automatically go there |
Dominic Parker | 15 years ago # |
Mine is working in HTTP. |
Arie | 15 years ago # |

Dani | 15 years ago # |

"Modern Day Blackout."
--all I know is, Yahoo Mail has never gone down once that I can recall. Not once.
Apple's MobileMe also down: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10014391-2.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20
Now THAT one is a real mess. And you PAY for it. I tried DotMac- what a bogus service. |
Zim | 15 years ago # |
remember GMail is in beta :P |
RC | 15 years ago # |
It works from here... |
Nicholas | 15 years ago # |
I have 7000 MB on my account now too, but I didn't look to see what my storage was before it went down. |
DPic | 15 years ago # |
<<I have 7000 MB on my account now too, but I didn't look to see what my storage was before it went down.>> It was there before gmail went down...gmail is constantly growing, remember? |
Colin Colehour | 15 years ago # |
I had Gmail problems around 4pm CDT today wonder if it was all related. |
Zim | 15 years ago # |
They apologized through a post on their blog: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/we-feel-your-pain-and-were-sorry.html |
Niraj Sanghvi | 15 years ago # |
Yeah, that apology is weird because it seems to acknowledge the fact that there isn't good communication when issues like this occur. They say the Google Guides on Groups are the fastest source of updates, though they usually only chime in with official posts a while after after dozens of comments have been posted (often across more than one thread) about problems. And they are vague about what the actual problem is, even when they claim they have a solution. |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
Perhaps no relation, but I'm seeing this at the bottom of a message above a ZIP file attachment:
"Oops... the virus scanner has a problem right now. Download at your own risk, or try again later. " |
Zim | 15 years ago # |
I don't see that, Philipp; it's fixed or our accounts are using different servers (or data centers?), maybe? |
Susie | 15 years ago # |
My friend just lost her entire inbox!!
3 years of mails and contacts up in the smoke! I am moving my mails to Yahoo now! |
George | 15 years ago # |
susie. This would be the only case of lost data for this outage, as far asI know. your friend should contact the gmail team, there's certainly a mistake: isn't it a lost password or sth like that? |
Jack Johnson | 15 years ago # |
As the "cloud services" start to go MORE mainstream, we will continue to see how dependent we really are. This article has GMail as one of Google's top-10 disappointments. Maybe it's not really a disappointment (it has 100m users, and all) but still in beta? c'mon.

I'm still unable to log into my Gmail account from Japan. After a long loading period I get the same "Temporary Error (502)" message. iGoogle just shows "Information is temporarily unavailable." in my Gmail feed.
Phillip, I've been getting that "Virus Scanner not working" message ever since I came to Japan almost 5 months ago. Really strange. |
John M | 15 years ago # |
Sorry for the double post. I thought I should mention that Gmail did start working again since that first outage, but as of now I haven't been able to access my account for about 12 hours. |
Jenny Y | 15 years ago # |
In the same boat as John M, I haven't been able to log into gmail when I woke up this morning. I can't get in on IMAP and I've tried old html versions of gmail with no luck either. |
John M | 15 years ago # |
OK, so some time in the last 5 hours or so my account started working again. It wasn't such a big inconvenience for me, but did make me realize how much I rely on Gmail for anything from business to personal e-mail.
Maybe I should start using my personal hosting space for my e-mail, but statistically that's probably more likely to lead to data loss than using Google, who spend millions maintaining the integrity and security of their databases. Maybe using paid Google Apps is the best of both worlds; then I can complain and get a reply from a real person when something goes wrong. ^_^ |
