15 gigs of space in gmail!nerfwibbler | Tuesday, August 4, 2009 14 years ago • 9,761 views |
i just noticed that in one of my gmail accounts its saying that i have 15 gig of space.
screengrab: http://i28.tinypic.com/15z1o28.png
normally it's 7.3 gig. is this a sign of google rolling out extra capacity for gmail users?

Cool... I think a Google "Cosmo" release is coming soon... With the upgrades to Google Docs recently, and I noticed the Gmail "storage counter" on the home page stopped last week... Seems like they're moving some stuff behind the scenes and getting ready for a launch... |

nerfwibbler : Can you go here and make a screen capture please ?

Timing is very very strange...
Remember the launch of the paid storage thing and the fusion of Gmail / Picasa extra storage ?
It was 2 years ago (in 3 days)...

Ive still "7355 MB" currently |

The storage counter looks completely different in Gmail when you've paid for extra storage. It shows a bar graph as well as the counter, so I don't think it's paid storage... |
Luka | 14 years ago # |
I know, but there is a possibility that this is a Google Apps account, by asking for the screen, it removes this possibility. |

Gmail: 7355 MB https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageStorage?hl=en : 8.03 GB |

There is a bit of incoherence between my gmail and my google account.

I think I found nerfwibbler on Twitter... seems like he's the only one seeing 15GB... maybe it is just a glitch?

Chrome OS Storage Manager Online (maybe ?) |
nerfwibbler | 14 years ago # |
Luka – i went to that link and grabbed a screenshot.
yup its 15 gig
http://i28.tinypic.com/2rp7h48.png
my other gmail accounts show the usual 7.3 gig. maybe its just a mistake on google's part. or maybe not – the account is not one i use everyday – its a throwaway account. so perhaps google are testing out the 15 gig on accounts that arent used too often. perhaps?
|
Luka | 14 years ago # |
Hummm, I have to check my other accounts!!
My hypothesis for the storage incoherence : some documents I opened with google docs are no longer in the Google Account Total but are still counted in the Gmail total.
We may have a new service (say cosmo, or docs) that will have storage limit soon.
|
nerfwibbler | 14 years ago # |
and just to be clear – it is NOT paid storage. as i said, its from a throwaway gmail account that i have.
|
mbegin | 14 years ago # |
I checked all my other accounts 3 hours ago when I first saw this post, and again 30 minutes ago... But they all still say 7.3GB :( |
PierreS | 14 years ago # |
Modified documents would be migrated to the new service? Something that triggered those kind of discrepancies |
mbegin | 14 years ago # |
>> We may have a new service (say cosmo, or docs) that will have storage limit soon.
That's what I'm thinking too – And at that time, Google will probably increase the shared storage quota. |
mbegin | 14 years ago # |
I keep getting logged out of my Google Account... It's happened 3 times so far this morning. This has never happened before. Something strange is going on today........ |
nerfwibbler | 14 years ago # |
canonical recently launched "ubuntu one" – which is their version of cloud storage
ubuntuone.com
maybe google are gearing up to provide their long awaited gDrive
[Unlinked – Tony] |
Luka | 14 years ago # |
Maybe (this is pure speculation) all the compatibles attachments will be readable from docs (cosmo) as picasa web albums and youtube videos from the same account. This way, docs will became the center of online files search and managing.
But, according to the cosmo leaked pdf, cosmo is an evolution of platypus that allowed an integration with OS. Google is ready to do something like this with MacFuse (Mac and Linux) and Windows client was leaked too.
So go hunt for a cosmo client! |

nerfwibbler, do you see anything strange / new if you visit https://docs.google.com using that account? |

I was thinking yesterday that a "Cosmo" release might be near with the announcement of "Google Chrome to sync bookmarks" http://blogoscoped.com/forum/158361.html |

> Google’s Gdrive arriving in 2009:
The source for that article was TG Daily (http://www.tgdaily.com/html_tmp/content-view-41094-140.html) which basically "borrowed" most of its content from this article without giving any credit:

Yes, and cosmo would be the web interface for the bookmark sync system. This picture is the hint :

Thanks Tony, the source for that article was you :-o |

The reason for this is probably that Cosmo has integrated with Amethyst. (See the pdf) |

Another strange thing that happened last week (in Google Docs) that made me wonder if a Cosmo integration was taking place behind the scenes, is that one of our Google Apps users came to me saying that she no longer had access to any shared files in Google Docs. I checked her account and sure enough, the shared docs were missing from her list. I checked the sharing permissions on the files and nothing had changed... Then I tried to access the files from her account through the static URL that you can share and she was able to view/edit the files that way – They just weren't showing up in her Docs list... Very strange. Yesterday she came back to me and said the files are now back in her Docs list. |
nerfwibbler | 14 years ago # |
that definitely sounds like something going on behind the scenes alright mbegin.

My GMAIl is all at the sudden very slow...
This is taking longer than usual. Try reloading the page. If that doesn't work, you can:
1. Disable Labs and try again. 2. If you're on a slow connection, try basic HTML view. 3. For more troubleshooting tips, visit the help center.
Maybe this has to do something with the above... |

I've spotted something weird too. Today I go to http://mail.google.com/ through IE6 for Windows 2000 SP4, and I see Gmail 2.0's loading page! (Gmail 2.0's interface won't show after loaded, though. Also, I can't reproduce this.)
Besides, it seems that Google Docs source code was updated recently. Now I can't find links to Chrome Folder image, PDF image... ... in it. |

gmail 2.0 is working on ie6 for about a half year |

hebbet: Gmail 2.0 works for IE6 which has MICROSOFT'S LATEST UPDATE installed. Mine isn't, so Gmail 2.0 shouldn't work for me. |

Why on earth would you use the world's most hated browser? You must hate your computer. Get chrome or firefox! |

I like safari, am I okay DPic?

DPic: There are two computers at my home. One is new (with Chrome installed) and the other is old (my mom & dad use this one and they don't want to use any NEW browser...). I checks mail from that old computer today. |

hebbet:
According to http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/new-gmail-code-base-now-for-ie6-too.html :
"...This week, we've started to roll out Gmail's new code base to IE6 users. If you use IE6 AND HAVE THE LATEST IE6 UPDATES FROM MICROSOFT INSTALLED (or the specific patch that's required), you'll start seeing the features listed above."
It seems that the patch mentioned in that post was not available in Windows 2000. |
