Google Maps Europe Now Detailed (View post)Artem | Tuesday, April 25, 2006 18 years ago • 12,487 views |
What's really strange to is why you can see the streetnames in Europe, but cannot search for them (the same applies to the Google Earth).
Example results for Finland: Here you can see the Tieteenkatu street in the city Tampere: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Tieteenkatu,+tampere,+finland&ll=61.456654,23.855567&spn=0.008859,0.026929&om=1 You can search for Tampere, F inland http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=tampere,+finland&om=1 But search for tieteenkatu, tampere, finland returns no results http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=tieteenkatu,+tampere,+finland&om=1

Amen! Google, I love you :D That is awesome. I can finally start my projects. Now update the search within and update the sat images, please ;-) |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
same deal here!
now i can start seriously hacking the Maps API and producing some Europe centric mash-ups.

Justin > yep, it will rain down google maps on the web
Artem > as we said in the previous thread http://blogoscoped.com/forum/27644.html , even if you see roads in many countries, search roads isn't necessarily enabled. These roads are here only for directions I think. It works only in few countries.
|
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Artem, I could successfully search for my home street... using the form street, city, country. |
Joe | 18 years ago # |
me too – it found my apartment in Munich with street, city, country with perfect accuracy |
Corsin Camichel | 18 years ago # |
Man, I need to move. Nothing indexed for my 1000 people village. |
TOMHTML | 18 years ago # |
Where do you come from ? |
Michael Scott | 18 years ago # |
Is the green the underground routes?
If so can I turn it off? No.

Each country have is own "color code for maps". In UK, green = highways I think, it's red in france. and so forth |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
if you want to start making European mash ups, you'll might want a free source of geo co-ordinates.
you can grab this info from a U.S. site (and its free):

C'est une de la plus grande resort du ski en l'Europe. It is one of the biggest ski and snowboard resorts across Europe.
PS: do not correct my French :D |
Corsin Camichel | 18 years ago # |
Okay, for every Maps user: update to Version 2 (v=2), in Version 1 the data is not updated. |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
i might have found a new map icon
note the "flower" icon in this map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=museum&near=basingstoke&ll=51.268789,-1.081638&spn=0.038987,0.1157&t=k&om=1

Justin, I'm getting an error at http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/ ? |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
> i might have found a new map icon
That's a sponsored link, does the advertiser choose to create the icon? |
TOMHTML | 18 years ago # |
Justin > error in your link, the good address here : http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html
Corsin > aucune faute ;-) Hey, we have something in common, I live in a town where there is one of the hugest artificial ski slope, search Noeux-Les-Mines (France) on Google ;-) So, Laax is in Switzerland, but contrary to what we could think by watching the map, placenames and road are not yet in the database, so you could'nt search businesses or directories. Be quiet ;-)
hey, in switzerland, you have a city called "digg" ? :-D |
Corsin Camichel | 18 years ago # |
TOMHTML all streets are in, so I think its only matter of time until the search will work. It's not a village :D it's another small village and the proper name is Trin Digg :D

I found a flaw on the map of Sweden. :)
The map shows a large island that does not exist, see satellite.

Ulf > you talk about the island(s) where there is Faro, Gotland etc. ? It's weird, or the map is really old! |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
search is working – try "bars in munich" or "hotels in madrid"
|
Artem | 18 years ago # |
I guess search is working for major countries (or major cities) only |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
if you zoom into Rome, you'll see red "M" icons for the Metro stations http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=roma+italia&ll=41.905759,12.495618&spn=0.011594,0.042701&om=1
London has the tube logo to mark it's underground stations: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=london&ll=51.500197,-0.126197&spn=0.009698,0.042701&om=1
in germany, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are marked by an "S" or "U" logo http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=munich&ll=48.139096,11.580264&spn=0.010396,0.042701&om=1

Looks they also show Metro stops. Take a look at Roma, Italy. You can see the Colosseo Metro from this map. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=rome,+italy&ll=41.891224,12.491112&spn=0.0046,0.012102&t=h&om=1
Zoom out and ya see them all over the city. |

This might be new for Europe, but this information has been available for the UK for a long time. |

Metros in Paris : blue "M" http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Paris,+France&ll=48.861666,2.351289&spn=0.01118,0.054245&t=h&om=1
Thanks Justin for "more details" (it works in US & Co since few months), it works in Paris too. |

Where's Malta? :-( |
justin flavin | 18 years ago # |
ha ha... yes – it looks like Malta has become a victim of rising sea levels because of global warming:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=malta&ll=35.937496,14.375416&spn=1.827857,5.388794&om=1

Greece placenames use the Greek alphabet.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=athens,+greece&ll=37.979928,23.730125&spn=0.111223,0.3368&om=1
useful for the Greeks – but difficult for the millions of tourists. i noticed a similar thing in Japan (its all Japanese script).
is there an option somewhere to render the names in our Latin alphabet?

If you zoom in you'll see that the area highlighted is not a island at all, but a national park – there are lots of these around the world that cover water rather than land. Well spotted though!

and you have to love the aparently random inclusion of the E30/M1 road, which runs from Poland, all the way across Belarus to Mockba in Russia.
Does anyone know what's so special about this road? How did google end up with data for this road (and its junctions) but not for any other road in Belarus...? |
Haochi | 18 years ago # |
O, I can see Philipp's house. This will never happen in most of the Asian country, Japan is an expection. |
Splasho | 18 years ago # |
I hadn't noticed that, well spotted Mark.
I guess they used (or paid for) every road which runs within a set of countries (including Poland) and that was one of them.
it does suggest that Google themselves don't do much manual touching up. |
TOMHTML | 18 years ago # |
The Road between Moscow and Europe is here just to show that there is a link between the Russian capital (which have all is roads, even the smallest, drawn on the map) and Europe.
Oh, and "E" of "E30" means "European road"... that's why there is the same in Serbia |
mark glanville | 18 years ago # |
aha... thanks for the explanation. |

The tabs in http://maps.google.de are braindumb, unfortunately. When I enter [pizza stuttgart] it doesn't work. I need to click "companies" and then enter the query in two parts, into two boxes. In http://maps.google.com it all works easily within one box, e.g. for [pizza new york]. Why do they change this for Germany? |
TOMHTML | 18 years ago # |
Strange : " Folgende Adresse konnte nicht gefunden werden: pizza stuttgart, Germany
Möchten Sie:
* Karte abrufen von Stuttgart * Unternehmen suchen, die mit pizza nahe Stuttgart übereinstimmen "
it's the same in French.
Really strange |
TOMHTML | 18 years ago # |
I have written at "support google maps" in order to correct that ;-) |
Ilya Baklanov | 18 years ago # |
Yes! Finally Google added maps of Moscow. But hte problem is that search doesn't work within it. If you search for "Moscow bar" you get no results (although there are thousands of them in Moscow ;)). Also if you search for "Москва" (Moscow in Russian) then Google doesn't find the city (although all the streets are named in Russian on the maps).
Anyways, I'm happy that from now on I can use GMaps both for Moscow and Maastricht, where I study now :D |

The maps are great!!! BUT, I wonder why eastern Europe is not detailed. I don´t think it's less important than the rest of Europe and a llot of peaople would find it useful, even the ones in the easter Europe. So if you pelase detail the East, it would be very helpful. |
Art-One | 17 years ago # |
It's not only eastern Europe that is not detailed, a lot of Belgium isn't detailed neither...
Just be patient, I think... |
