Yeah it is new.

They also upgraded my paid storage another G as you can see in the pic.

Also new: the pictures you've uploaded to Blogger (probably the new Blogger only) are displayed in Picasa Web Albums (1 folder per blog, with a small Blogger pictogram).

they ADD 1 GB!

"You are currently using 134 MB (1%) of your 7144 MB" :-)

All the updates here:
http://picasa.google.com/intl/en_US/web/whatsnew.html

They've also added the ability to search across all publicly viewable pictures and improved the way you link to pictures.

Personally I'm most chuffed about the 1Gb storage and Blogger integration.

Can anyone actually get at the search function?

When I am logged in, searching is either through "my albums" or "my favorites" – I don't seem to have an option to search "Community Photos"

zmarties [PersonRank 10]

A further twist on the searching – if I go to picasaweb.google.com then I have a search box (just for "My Photos" and "My Favorites"), but if I go to picasaweb.google.co.uk the search function is missing.

Looks like they may have "preannounced" this, without having actually rolled out the feature across all data centres.

Just click on the small arrow on the left side of the searchbox, you will see the "community photos" option.

I still don't have the "browse tags" feature on the main opublic page, that everyone else has. but I have all these other features. any idea why? my language settings are english, us. and most of my photos are tagged.

Armin,

Some of us, myself including, have been reporting on the Google Groups Picasa site that we don't see the Browse Tags options on our own albums. I do see it when viewing other peoples albums.

I can type in a tag and search successfully on it on my own album.

How does facebook manage to have unlimited space for photos?

<quote>Upload as many photos as you want, even your entire quail collection. We only allow you to put 60 photos in an album, but you can upload as many albums as you want.</quote>
http://www.facebook.com/help.php#cat15

Don't get me wrong, I love the increased storage that PicasaWeb is offering, but the idea of have unlimited uploads is even more appealing.

I wonder if Facebook compresses images?

I would love syncing as long as it is optional.

While I am at it, put me down for the option to password protect my photo and to better control access.

fyi – this upgrade was U.S. only

Yes facebook compresses their images and reduce their size if they're too big. I'l glad picasa upgraded the storage, the amount it had when it first came out had me very very disappointed

Which part of the upgrade? I'm in the UK and I've got 1000MB and can search public photos...

I think he meant that you would only see these upgrades when using the English (United States) language; because I didn't see them until I switched from English (UK)

Anyone can upload videos using Picasa.
Blogger pictures as Picasa Album (means: no unlimited upload in blogger anymore)

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

<<no unlimited upload in blogger anymore>>

Simple calculation:
I try to upload images smaller than 50KB. Sometimes I upload larger versions of the images (<150KB). On average, one in two posts has images.

5*50+2*150=550KB for 10 posts

1 MB images -> ~20 posts
1,000 MB images -> ~20,000 posts

And these numbers are highly inflated.

If you upload a 200KB JPG file in every post, you can still write 5,000 posts.

Besides, you can always use another Google account or other image hosting sites.

Or if you really had to, you could just pay $25 and get more storage. But everybody wants things for free these days...

stefan2904 [PersonRank 10]

yes, ok.

[put at-character here]tony: the point is not HOW MUCH $/€ to pay, but rather TO pay.

Blogger's help has always stated that:

<<If you are posting pictures through Blogger, Picasa, or Hello to a free BlogSpot blog, there is a total limit of 300 MB.>>
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42348&query=limit&topic=&type=f

So this is an improvement.

stefan2904 [PersonRank 10]

Ok, never read that before.

my blog album has a size of 6 MB with 124 pictures.

Ya, What did they mean by "counting" ?

Is it also increasing (by a bit) like Gmail. However it's been 1000 MB for me.

They compress the photos in dimensions, not in file size.

Nope. Picasa Web does some smart resizing, but it still stores the original image.

nice!i might move over to picasa from Flickr so.

since Yahoo bought Flickr it's become dog slow at times (and sometimes so slow as to be unusable). and the forcing of everyone to have yahoo accounts was the final straw for me.

might as well just switch to picasa and use my google account.

Yes, images should save at one place, easy to manage.
