I just wanted to be the first to write it here:
Google operating system is reality now!

It's not our beloved blog
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/
;)
And it's not a Google official product.
But it's here.

Homepage (not much to see, at the moment):
http://www.thinkgos.com/

News about it:
http://news.google.com/news?ncl=1122955650

...and Philipp should get the royalties for the name:

Yeah this is the OS being sold on those $200 gPCs at Wal-Mart, right?

Interestingly, there is an iPod nano picture in the right corner. Can't see that going down well with Apple.

James Xuan [PersonRank 10]

Yeah, I noticed that too.

There's a Q&A in the lower right. Is that for the non-existent Google Answers?

I'd say it's just "Help"

[put at-character here]Martin, that's not something new to linux

Man, you people really have to try Ubuntu!

James Xuan [PersonRank 10]

^^^I have, but installing stuff still freaks me out. I tried to install compizfusion (hadn't got7.10 ot this point) and it took forever. Then...nothing happened. I learned for myself a few weeks later that my Radeon 1300X wasn't supported. With linux, you have to look around forums and stuff to find all this info. And I never got flash to work.

By far the easies system to install stuff on is a mac

Won't run on my laptop and I'm in the process of clearing my second hard drive on my PC to dual boot it.

(Interesting Fact: My second HDD is labeled G: so I already have GDrive :D)

HAHAHA, What about damn small linux! on your laptop, or Xubuntu

Roger Browne [PersonRank 10]

Ubuntu comes as a Live CD so that you can check that it runs on your hardware before you install it.

I run Fedora 7, but I recently switched my family to Ubuntu 7.10 with good results.

>> Man, you people really have to try Ubuntu!

I have Ubuntu (haven't used it in about 6 months), but it reacted to my nVidia drivers so badly that I am forced into text mode and have to type commands (which I can't remember) to get graphics again. This happens every time I start Ubuntu and I couldn't find any help so I gave up on it.

Yeeaaahhh that's my point, my laptop won't load the Live CD

[put at-character here]James
Any idea what disadvantages there are to using Xubuntu (compared to Ubuntu/Win98)?

James Xuan [PersonRank 10]

from wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/xubuntu

<<Ubuntu uses the GNOME Desktop Environment as well as GNOME applications. Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment which, using fewer system resources, works better with older computers. Xubuntu also features primarily GTK+ applications that are designed to use fewer resources than their GNOME counterparts.>>

No, Green OS. The OS is meant to work on low-end computers and be browser focused

found this, with a screenshot:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=6817&referer=sphere_related_content

unlike normal Ubuntu, this runs the Enlightenment window manager.

gOs found David Liu is quoted as saying:
"When you make Linux look pretty and put ton of Google apps on it, you pacify it for consumer. You could say gOS is Google inspired but not official stamped"

ah... so it's not an official Google OS.

Torrents are better for distribution anyhow.

Ok guys! I downloaded and burned it and I'm using it right now! The windows are very like OSX with the buttons circular and on the left, only these ones are in 3 shades of green! The search box built into the desktop is cool and very useful, and I love the way It comes with firefox, so you don't have to use IE to get Firefox! Skyping my friends right now too!. The iPod icon was for Rythembox music player.

Speaking of the iconbar/dock, it doesn't show all the icons at once, when you go down to it and move your mouse to the right, the icons go left like a conveyer belt and more appear and some dissapear at the other end. Clicking the desktop brings up a menubar... the icons are nice aswell, all very...Googley!:D

When you search from the google box on the dektop it launches the search in a window which has "Webrunner" at the top, while Meebo, Gmail, Docs all launch in Firefox or another tab if you already have it open.

When you minimize a program it goes into the bottom right of the screen, alongside the dock which sticks to the bottom left. When you hover on menu onptions of programs they are coloured deep green whils the desktop ones are lime coloured, very relaxing and nice.

All in all, a surprisingly nice OS!

Also, here is a screenshot http://aycu04.webshots.com/image/31043/2002040721379293024_rs.jpg

The skype icon in the bottom right is a minimised chat

On a side note, with gimp you can sava as ascii art. Cool!

[put at-character here]James haha Hi James!

"Can I play DVDs or mp3s with the gOS?

Out of the box, the gPC and other future gOS products will play DVDs and mp3s. In this free, downloadable version, the gOS will not include codecs for these proprietary formats."

Does this mean that the gOS could have a proprietary version in the future?

<<Google Maps(Maps)
Google news(news)>>

lolz! Isn't it funny, how nowadays more people have internet access than an office suite installed :D

Andrew Furzer [PersonRank 1]

I blame those pesky PC manufacturers, bundled software and limited or no CDs.

You by the hardware cheap then you only get the basic OS and have to pay big bucks to get it to do anything useful.

Where the internet software CD comes free on magazines the users are gonna try it for sure.

Maybe the office suite dudes are missing a trick ? :-)

As for restore CDs just don't get me started!!!!

I love the following quote:

<< What makes it stand out, however, is GOS, a version of Linux specially made to run Google applications like GMail and Google Documents. It also runs OpenOffice, an open-source office suite that can handle Microsoft Word documents, and some multimedia applications. >>

So this computer is using a Browser for most of its applications, so its useless without a net connection.
