New iGoogle Themes (View post)Tony Ruscoe | Tuesday, November 6, 2007 16 years ago • 10,383 views |
Post edit – Added the XML file for Solar System: http://www.google.com/ig/skins/planets.xml Thanks Ionut! |

BTW, this also introduces a new type of skin.
We've already got skins that change with the "weather" (e.g. Bus Stop) and "time" (e.g. most of the others) but the Solar System theme is a "day" skin, whereby you get a different planet each day. |

Great to have a Hong Kong theme! Hong Kong Rocks! ;) |

(Update: Added some screenshots...) |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
Interestingly enough, I just realized I accidentally skipped #2 of your instructions (to click the Select theme link) and the hack still worked here :) |
Tony Ruscoe | 16 years ago # |
You're right. Previewing the theme automatically expands that "Select theme" box so that you can click the "Save" button.
Update: Step 2 removed! :-) |

Btw, the Aja Tiger theme was around for a while in the Korean iGoogle homepage. |

Javascript injections for easter eggs. javascript:void(document.getElementById("ext_css").href="http:// www.google.com/ig/skins/JR/JR_3.14am.css"); javascript:void(document.getElementById("ext_css").href="http:// www.google.com/ig/skins/tiger/tiger_3.14am.css"); javascript:void(document.getElementById("ext_css").href="http:// www.google.com/ig/skins/autumn/autumn_3.14am.css"); javascript:void(document.getElementById("ext_css").href="http:// www.google.com/ig/skins/hongkong/hongkong_3.14am.css"); And no easter egg for the solor system

PS. to my last post due to the automatical shortening and recognition of urls, its really hard to copy/impossible. Hope P. Lenssen can somehow fix the post... |

Evil Dr Ken | 16 years ago # |
Are they ever Going to make some that dont look like they are for a 3 year old???????? |
Jared Cherup | 16 years ago # |
Evil Dr. Ken – What do you propose? |
photoactive | 16 years ago # |
I kind of agree with Evil Dr Ken: I'm not into the cartoon figures, but love the Cityscape theme, which is pastelly, nicely drawn and not in your face. The new Hong Kong one looks good too. |

nothing beats the Classic theme;) |
kunio | 16 years ago # |
Already avalible in polish, on polish igoogle site. http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9184/newigooglethemesonpoliswe8.jpg |
coolrepublica | 16 years ago # |
Why do they have so few themes? I say give me 100 themes. |
coolrepublica | 16 years ago # |
Takashi Murakami should draw some themes. Japanese anime themes. Comics themes. Movie themes. Why is IGoogle holding back? unlish the beast within. |

Well I see them now on my igoogle page. |

Since Google didn't replaced the Seasonal Scape theme (which currently is Spring/Summer) with the Autumm one, and instead of that they created a new theme, why they don't reenable Winter Scape again? |
Luka | 16 years ago # |
I just realized I found 10 pictures but only 7 are used in this theme... and i can not find the 3.14AM easter egg... |
Tony Ruscoe | 16 years ago # |
Luka, the 3:14 Easter eggs only work with the time-based themes and the Solar System theme is day-based. Not sure why there are 10 pictures though. The theme seems to use Earth as some kind of default but then there should be just one per day:
Sunday: Sun Monday: Moon Tuesday: Mars Wednesday: Mercury Thursday: Jupiter Friday: Venus Saturday: Saturn |

I saw on today's news that a fifth planet has been discovered in the solar system. I don't know it's name though.
You think Google would will update the solar system theme just for this particular planet? |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
Not quite. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/06/AR2007110601399.html |
Pau Tomàs | 16 years ago # |
They used the normal correlation between week days and planets, so Uranus, Neptune and Earth images are not needed, maybe they're there just as eastern eggs?
And just if somebody is interested on the missing Winter Scape theme: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/13668 |
Haochi | 16 years ago # |
>>a fifth planet has been discovered<< I thought we have 8 in the solar system... ?? |
Mysterius | 16 years ago # |
Haochi: See Ionut's comment. David was about 40 light-years off. ;) |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Oh...Sorry..
I had a chance to look at it for just two seconds before the next headline appeared.
I thought it can't be possible. But after Tony told me Pluto isn't a planet, (http://blogoscoped.com/forum/112975.html#id113993) i didn't know what to think anymore. :P |
LeadCritic | 16 years ago # |
These all look really lame. |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
David You didn't know that :-o
Philipp even made fun of it :D http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-08-29-n42.html |
Michele | 16 years ago # |
For some reason, suddenly today no themes at all will appear on my igoogle page. I didn't even know about the new themes, until I started looking around to find out what the problem is. I've tried it in both IE and my usual Firefox browsers. |
Kristen | 16 years ago # |
Michele: I'm having the same problem. My Cityscape theme is gone, and I can't get any themes to appear today. |
Michele | 16 years ago # |
Thanks, it's good to know that I'm not the only one. |
Josh Chandler | 16 years ago # |
These are absolutely fantasic designs, kudos to all who take the time to develop these themes :) I have adapted the Autumn theme to my iGoogle

Is JR a reference to something? |
Pau Tomàs | 16 years ago # |
Michele: I don't see any aside from the obvious one to Godzilla (and the rest of Japanese monster movies) |

I asked Google for more information on the iGoogle planets themes. Here's their reply:
<<As with the first batch of themes we launched earlier this year, we worked very closely with a third party to design the graphics for these new themes. We’ve worked hard to ensure the design and technology underpinning these new themes continues to offer the best possible user experience. We set out to create more themes that were both graphically-rich and dynamic, but still meet Google’s speed and scalability requirements. With the launch of themes, we developed a new CSS framework to optimize our ability to scale images and easily add new themes. We used a tiling approach from the center of the page to ensure that resizing the browser did not distort the image.>> |
