False alarm: it's the gmail skins plugin for firefox.

Yea... that screenshot didn't look something Google would do to Gmail.
I really believe Google is far from working with yellow faces, as Phillip said, I belive that when emoticons are integrated into Gmail, they will have the look of GmailTalk's emoticons.

Is it a greasemonkey script?

No, it's the Gmail Skins extension for Firefox. You can get it here:

gmailskins.mozdev.org/installa ...

I noticed the smileys, but then one day they were gone. I didn't realize that it was because I had uninstalled the extension. I even ignored the fact that the images are found at an imageshack.us URL.

It's not a false alarm. I inspected the DOM and there is full support for smileys.

You can prove it to yourself. Type this into the FF address bar:

javascript:alert(top.js.I.Fa)

I have too much homework to figure out how to enable them, sorry :)

I'm glad it was a false alarm. I'd like to see gmail smilies like the ones in gtalk.

I'm not sure it's false alarm... or at least, Brian's JavaScript alert works here too even though I don't have Gmail Skins installed!

Brian's JS alert works here too, and I don't have Gmail Skins installed.

But that screenshot is from the Gmail Skins extension. So I guess depending on how you look at it, it's either a false alarm or just an early alarm.

Maybe a lucky false alarm :)

Who's to say the alert box isn't referencing something from chat? the emoticons match up (with the chat ones).

Brian Mingus [PersonRank 10]

That's entirely possible! I didn't realize there were emoticons in the chat.

I've asked Adrian, who sent this tip to me, to tell me the image URL of one of the smileys. Turns out it's
chrome://gmskins/skin/mozilla_tongueout.png

This is pretty amusing.

The emoticons are indeed due to gmailskins. There are two urls for each emoticon, the chrome url (displayed on toolbar), and the imageshack url (when put in to email – obviously the chrome url cannot be read by the recipient of the email).

Incase you are wondering how I know this it's because I am the extension author. I will have to make this feature clearer on the install page!

That javascript you found is used by gmail talk, I seriously doubt google will add emoticons to email, and the smiley artists are mozilla smiley artists, those are the same emoticons from the Thunderbird email client.

Warning: Gmail skins also adds an "insert image from url" button (the camera), just incase somebody reports it as a new feature being rolled out by gmail :)

Sorry, no gmailskins for IE. It doesn't support nearly enough CSS to make such a thing realistic, and is much more difficult to develop such an extension for (no dominspector).

One more reason to use FireFox :) (Yes I need smileys).
