It's not the first time (see real-time quotes, privacy enhancements etc.) and it's more like an acquisition announcement.

But isn't sonic technology based on Java? Unlike Google's technologies that are based on JavaScript (including AJAX)...

Ludwik Trammer [PersonRank 10]

Ok, maybe they are talking about server-side Java. Thought I'm not sure.

> How uncool, Google is now announcing their products,
> Microsoft-style, instead of just releasing them

Isn't that what we wanted? Google to stop hiding their products plans?

not sure how they will tie the apps together within the framework of JotSpot (if at all)..

If presently is coming out in summer, then why did the Jotspot group get officially launched ??

Google now seems to be a little too much fragmented to deliver proper hosted services as an encompassing whole for collaborative efforts across an enterprise.

There is much work that they need to do to compete with Office suite and Sharepoint07!!

Wow. So that is client-side Java? Google mostly goes for DHTML, rarely for Flash, have they ever gone for client-side Java?*

*Aside from that Valentine's game :)

> Wow. So that is client-side Java?

But maybe they bought Sonic for their server-side solution, mainly Good .ppt format support. I can't imagine Google launching product with Java on client-side. That's so Web 1.0 ;) But seriously – Java is bloated and isn't installed by default in any browser.

Wasn't their first GMail notifier years ago written in Java? unsupported of course. as well as their original video player.

i'm predicting they migrate it to flash.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Or they will not get the teams together and see how they can add the Tonic guys' knowledge within DHTML (or Flash). Like how they got Google Earth, and then threw them together with the DHTML gurus to create Google Maps.

But you are talking about the software that wasn't embed on the website, aren't you? The only Java applet embedded on Google's website that I remember is this easter game from the early days ;)

or maybe they just bought tonic guys to keep the competetion down.. chatter indicates that its a "build" and not a buy for presently...

It's officially stated in the group that it has been launched only to centralize the support for Jotspot in one site, nothing to do with a near release (at least that's what they say...)

The above link has some info about Tonic. It seems they use SVG/VML/JS for the online app, not the java client.

I wonder exactly when Google acquired them. The fact that they can already announce that they will release Presentations by the summer tells me the team has already been at google working to integrate the product.

Furthermore, on the Q&A, Google does not mention TonicPoint as one of the products of Tonic Systems. TonicPoint was still in beta when Google acquired them. Possibly Google intended to keep it a secret, but since Eric Schmiddt had announced that presentation was coming at the Web 2.0 conference, they just decided to reveal the entire news on the blog.

""Q. Who is Tonic Systems? What are their products?
A: Tonic Systems is a San Francisco-based company that provides Java presentation automation products and solutions for document management – Tonic Systems Builder, Tonic Systems Filter, Tonic Systems Transformer, Tonic Systems Viewer, and JarJar Links. Features of their products included text extraction for indexing documents, presentation creation capabilities and document conversion tools."""

Odd.. some minutes ago there was a 404 error page but these links redirect to Tonicpoint.com now. Both of these.

That is weird, just a second ago one of them redirected the Google page on the acquisition. But then a second later it was back to the old tonic page.

JarJar Links ?!? WTF!

So with every new product Google releases, is it only because they bought a startup that was already working on the product?

some examples:
Writely = Google Documents
TonicPoint = Presentations
Urchin = Google Analytics
