We'll see tomorrow what we'll turn out to be true:
Google Cube
Google Pack
Google PC
or
Google Video Rental.

The last one will certainly happen at some point.

WTF???

RealPlayer?

Google, why hast thou forsaken me?

Brinke Guthrie [PersonRank 10]

can you opt out of certain things? I dont want trillian or FF..I HAVE Real and NAV and Picasa and stuff. The screensaver would be OK tho.

Bjorn Ruwald [PersonRank 1]

The Trillian-Google talk combo strikes me as odd.

Brinke Guthrie [PersonRank 10]

PS- I just read the WSJ piece. Now what kinda file size is THIS??? Like, 200 MB or something?
i have all of this already!

That software will include the open-source Firefox Web browser, a version of Norton AntiVirus software from Symantec Corp., Adobe Systems Inc.'s Reader software, RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer multimedia software, Trillian instant-messaging software from Cerulean Studios and Lavasoft AB's Ad-Aware antispyware software. Google Pack will also include Google's own desktop search software, Google Earth satellite imaging and maps software, Picasa photo-management software, Google Talk instant-messaging program, its Toolbar add-on for Web browsers and screen saver software.

It's obvious that Google is not naive enough to force users to install packages that they already have. My prediction is that it will give you the option to install each piece, or it will offer to uninstall all of the old versions of your software, and reinstall the package versions.

I'm suprised that with Google's recent deal with AOL that the AOL owned WinAmp was not included instead of Real Player, in my opinion it is far superior.

What do you think about the Url :

https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?service=tester&%3Bcontinue=http://pack.google.com/pack/pack_installer.html

What is service "tester" ? In french "test" means "to try"... But in english it's not the same signification :-S

and when you go here http://www.google.com/tester ...

Brinke Guthrie [PersonRank 10]

OK, one more.

Why would this thing have Trillian in it...AND Google Talk? The point would be...................what?

You can see this logo after going through this link...

http://pack.google.com/pack/pack_installer.html

This goes very fast but you can clearly see this logo in Firefox tabs..

This will save you dry eyes in trying to see the logo flash by:

http://pack.google.com/pack/favicon.ico

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

That logo you've got there might not be far off. Did you see this?

http://surfnicaragua.blogspot.com/2005/12/video-and-pack-icons.html

If that's site's for real, it looks he's the guy who creates some of the graphics for Google. Check our his previous post about the Zeitgeist graphic:

News are so fast! The favicon is online since less than 1 day!
Blogoscoped always on top ;)

Tony, I didn't see that site, very interesting tho! I actually created the graphic based on the tiny Favicon I saw on pack.google.com (I found the pointer that there's a favicon on Digg today).

Added the icons Tony, great find...

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Tried it, I get the same "Invalid request."

Andrew Hitchcock [PersonRank 10]

That blogspot blog is down now.

Andrew Hitchcock [PersonRank 10]

Oh, another thing. I tried loading it just a minute ago and it said the service you are trying to access is currently unavailable, please try again later (paraphrased... I forgot to save it). Now it says "Invalid request."

Ok, so the luanchpad is there at that url , with the same deficencies.

What happens if goog luanches a googpack installed on a mini box @$399/- which cuts way into the ipod market ?? A gadget that is pakable ..think what ibm is to mainframes is to what googs is to digital content ??

Artem [PersonRank 4]

Google pack + the mini box. Hmm, to me it is a 'no go' without the office software. $400 is too much for just a browsing station (and you'd have to buy a monitor, wouldn't you?)

Jayenkai [PersonRank 2]

Going to an idiots pc, and being able to simultaneously install Ad-Aware, Firefox, and Trillian alone is good enough reason to have this. As a pack, it'll help clean up hundreds of PC's. In that way, well done Google..

Mynamesnotjohn [PersonRank 0]

Just as many have said why would Google just bundle a bunch yesterdays software titles? Most of them people have or could DL themselves from the source. I think Google is smarter than this, and must have something of far more value hidden up that sleeve... or maybe its the same old software with new GUI.

will there be a webcast of Page's keynote?

Tom Lech [PersonRank 1]

I agree with you. It;s to easy to give people what they already have. I think it will be something more then this. I and i hope it will be as good as other services

Just a small bit of useless/uninteresting information ... but when you send a request to http://pack.google.com it returns the following HTTP headers:

HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Location: https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?service=tester&continue=http://pack.google.com/
Content-Type: text/html
Server: COMINST/1.0
Content-Length: 505
Date: Fri, 06 Jan 2006 16:43:47 GMT
Connection: Keep-Alive

What webserver software is "COMINST/1.0"? It's not "GWS/2.1" that Google normally uses and Googling it returns nothing at the moment:

http://www.google.com/search?q=COMINST%2F1%2E0

In a different thread, Paul prijs posted the url :

http://pack.google.com/pack/about.html

which was live for a short time but now redirects as well. While it was live I found the following:

http://pack.google.com/pack/common_installer.js

In which you can see the programs that will be included within the pack and some links to icons for the programs.

Additionally, it appears there is a url for each product within the pack that redirects currently, but is available for example at http://pack.google.com/pack/product_earth.html for google earth, or http://pack.google.com/pack/product_firefox.html for firefox

I looked at the URIs from other google-services and type the same together with the purchases or pack-subdomain. So easy is it ;-) Try it yourself, you can often find interesthing things.

Looking into the robots.txt-files from many google-services are interesting, too.

Sorry for my english, I'm german.

pack/pack_installer.html

secondly, their internal site pack sites have not been crawled and indexed for publix consuption yet..

Your search – google pack – did not match any answers in our Help Center.

For anyone that missed the Google Pack About page, I've got a screenshot over on my blog. I've got a couple of screenshots of the icon designer's blog that has since been taken offline:

http://ruscoe.net/blog/2006/01/google-pack.asp

Whilst his blog has been pulled down, the screenshot that he took of the icons is still available (for the moment):

I am completely miffed. RealPlayer has the worst history of any software package aside from WeatherBug in terms of pestering the user with marketing schemata, confusing and indirect registration procedures that probe you for more data than necessary, and uninstalls that leave garbage behind than any other package I can think of.

Google has truly gone "mainstream" with this move, and for some reason that sounds really bad.

Mike Beckham [PersonRank 1]

You can deselect products, I dont want; Audobe Reader I have it, Realplayer I dont have (adware peice of crap) and Norton AntiVirus which is one of the worst anti virus programs around
